NASA lunar loo challenge: The US space agency NASA has thrown a new challenge of $20000 to the global community to send novel design concepts for compact toilets that can work in lunar gravity and microgravity.
NASA is preparing to return to the moon by 2024; it faces a severe problem in the form of a space toilet and needs your help to get it out. Yes! On Thursday, NASA threw out a challenge for the public and came up with concepts for the design of toilets that astronauts could use on the moon.
Although space toilets are already in use, they only design for microgravity. The concept that NASA demands is that it should also be working in lunar gravity, thereby allowing astronauts to use it when they are on the moon.
Declaring the challenge, NASA wrote on its website: "While the astronauts are in the cabin and outside of their spacesuit, astronauts can urinate and defecate in all the same capabilities as here on Earth. NASA is calling on the global community for its novel design concepts for compact toilets that can work in both lunar gravity and microgravity. These designs can be made suitable for the use of Artemis lunar landers that take us back to the Moon".
They added, "NASA's Human Landing System program is looking for a next-generation device that is more efficient, smaller, and capable of operating in both microgravity and lunar gravity. The challenge includes the technical category and the junior category".
Winning Prize:
The winning toilet design will get a reward worth $20,000 for first place, $10,000 for second place, and $5,000 for third place.
Winners in the junior category will get NASA-themed merchandise and public recognition.
Eligibility:
The challenge includes two categories: a 'technical' category and a 'junior' category. For the technical challenge, participants must be at least 18 years of age.
People under the age of 18 can apply for the Junior category of the lunar Loo Challenge.
The deadline for submission is August 17, 2020.
