Uzbekistan is confident that travelers will not get coronavirus when they visit.
The country has a population of over 33 million, but with its rapid lockdown approach, there are only 19 reports of coronavirus-related deaths.
They are confident that the country has launched a "Safe Travel Guaranteed" campaign, offering $3,000 if visitors become infected with the virus while traveling in Uzbekistan.
On Tuesday, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the decree. The estimated cost of medical care for the treatment of coronavirus in the country is $3,000.
"We want to reassure tourists that they can come to Uzbekistan," Sophie Ibbotson, Uzbekistan's tourism ambassador to the UK, said in a statement. "The government is so confident that with the new safety and hygiene measures being implemented in the tourism sector, tourists will be protected from COVID-19 that the President is ready to put money where their mouth is: if you get COVID-19 on holiday in Uzbekistan, we will compensate you."
However, there are a few warnings.
To receive $3,000, tourists must explore the country with a local tour guide.
Local tour guides and tourist destinations are required to obtain a certificate from the government, showing that they comply with safety and sanitary guidelines.
So far, the country has announced that it is open to visitors from low-risk countries such as Israel, China, Japan, and South Korea. According to Lonely Planet, travelers from the UK and Europe are required to quarantine for 14 days when they arrive.
It is not the first incentive to promote travel. The Italian island of Sicily announced that if you visit, it will pay for half of your flights, and a third of your hotel and Cancun will pay for half of your hotel expenses.
Other countries have taken the opposite approach. For example, Cambodia announced that passengers would have to deposit $3,000 to cover costs in the case if they received coronavirus.
