"Yet we are still looking for many taxable goods that sell without excise tape or labeled with counterfeit ones in Bali." Abdul Kharis, head of the Customs and Excise Supervision and Service Office (KPPBC) in Denpasar, said.

Sex toys are illegal in a conservative country. Officials say they corrupt the public sector and intercept regular shipments, so they will burn them as they are illegal drugs.

According to a report by Tribun-Bali, the items include 47 units of sex toys allegedly shipped from China, 157 liquid-vape bottles, and 626 bottles of alcohol. There are also cosmetics as well as health-related goods and electronics.

These items were seized between January and August of this year, and most of them were seized during the inspection of goods delivered from abroad. Abdul said many of these items were purchased online and have a total value of IDR1.7 billion.

“We [destroy things] by burning, breaking, cutting, pouring, and burying it onto the ground, with the intention of damaging it and destroying its functions,” Abdul explained.

In their latest bust, a total of 442 sex toys were destroyed in Bandung, the capital of the Indonesian province of West Java.

Dwiyono Widodo, a customs officer who led the operation, told Indonesian news site Detik that the epidemic had led to an increase in online sales of sex toys. At a press conference, he displayed confiscated sex toys, including a purple dildo and masturbation sleeve.

The growing demand for sex toys has become a global phenomenon during the epidemic.

Sales of sex toys have also been reported to have increased during the epidemic in New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Colombia.
